What are snowboard suits made of?
Snowboard suits are made from normally have 3 or 4 layers.
- The outer fabric layer of a garment is typically made of nylon or polyester and is coated with a durable water repellent (DWR). This coating repels water droplets, preventing them from penetrating the fabric and making it difficult for water, snow, and dirt to enter.
- A waterproof/breathable membrane is placed under the outer fabric layer. This membrane is typically made from ePTFE or PU and determines the fabric's waterproof and breathable qualities. The membrane has tiny holes that are too small for water droplets to pass through but allow water vapor molecules to pass through. This prevents water and snow from entering the jacket while allowing perspiration to escape.
- An insulation layer is an optional component that is not included in many fabrics. The insulation layer serves as the primary barrier that prevents heat from conducting through the fabric. Typically, insulation in jackets is made from synthetic materials, although it can also be constructed from down.
- The lining is a crucial component of the fabric as it provides support and protection to the other layers from the inside.
Are snowboard suits waterproof?
Snowboarding suits are typically designed to be waterproof or water-resistant, with insulation and convenient features such as pockets. Higher-end modern snowboarding suits often utilize a reliable waterproof membrane to withstand various snow conditions.
Do I need a one-piece or a two-piece snowboard suit?
One-piece snowsuits are practical on the slopes because they eliminate gaps between your parka and pants, preventing cold wind from getting in. Additionally, for those snowboarding in powder or beginners who may fall, a seamless connection is crucial to avoid exposing bare skin to snow.
How should a snowboard suit fit?
Snowboard clothing usually has a looser fit to enable a wider range of movement in the arms and legs.
How do I care for and clean my snowboard suit?
When it comes to maintaining your snowboarding gear, it is important to handle it with care and avoid using fabric softener. If you are unsure, it is always recommended to hand wash or seek professional help. Washing your gear is crucial for its maintenance, but it is not worth damaging expensive equipment.
