About the Salomon Men's Pulsar Trail Pro Trail Running Shoes
The Salomon Pulsar Trail Pro brings TPU composite plates to trail running in a shoe that is both responsive and stable. The TPU composite plate, called Energy Blade, is a stiff plate that gives more power to the runner by limiting the energy lost on every stride. Thanks to its decoupled construction, the Pulsar Trail Pro is flexible enough to still ensure great stability and comfort. It’s also built with Energy Surge foam, a super-springy and comfortable midsole that is 40 percent more responsive than Salomon’s previous foams, boosting your stride and increasing stability. The R.Camber rocker construction speeds up your transition, so you spend less time on the ground and more time moving forward. The combination of these three elements creates the perfect blend of responsiveness, comfort and stability to help you set personal records and win races. Your feet are protected in all the right places thanks to the mudguard on the side and gaiter that keep debris from getting in. A Contagrip MA outsole with an optimized lug geometry delivers optimum grip to keep you steady and safe from slippage, even on fast and gnarly runs.

Importantly (for me anyways) these shoes are a lot of fun to run in. They have a lot of pop and are very forgiving, a good combo. Also plenty of traction and drain quickly. I have both run very fast tempo trail efforts in these and a recent 100mi trail race with no hot-spots, blisters, or discomfort whatsoever.
New favorite, will be buying more now that the non-pink-cheetah-print version is available.
Looking over the specs, I knew what I was getting and I didn't buy the Pulsar Trail Pro for running technical trails; I have other great shoes for doing that. The Pulsar Trail Pro is great for graded hard-packed trails over gentle hills with relatively mild inclines and declines, which I run at least once per week at a brisk pace for around 90 minutes. For this type of running, the Pulsar Trail Pro performs admirably.
The fit is superb although I sized up for this one to wear with thicker socks. It's half-size larger than what I would normally wear but it ended up working out really good for the type of run I was looking to get from these shoes. It's very comfortable with a glove-like fit on the upper and the high-stack cushion on the dry hard-packed trails. It feels fairly light and is good for straight-ahead long-distance running on mixed terrains.
Having put in around 20 miles now, I'm very happy with the Pulsar Trail Pro and I expect to use it once per week on the type of trail that it seems to have been designed for. The midsole stack is too high for maneuvering on technical trails at high speeds and I don't even want to try that. But, for long distance straight ahead trail and mixed terrains running, the Pulsar Trail Pro would be hard to beat due to the combination of fit, comfort, and the energy return it provides.
Aesthetically, the Pulsar Trail Pro shoe is so sexy in the blue, really love the look and the redesigned logo. They certainly have a great spring to them and can see myself enjoying runs in them, if the fit was right.
Unfortunately the toe box is too small for my feet. I ended up taking them for a few runs to test (was probably lying to myself) and that confirmed my fears. For reference, I wear a US13 in the S/Lab 3 which fit perfectly. I bought the same size in the Pulsar Trail Pro and putting them side by side you can see the difference. I don't know that sizing up to a 14 would fix this, perhaps.
It grabs the more plush softness from the Ultra Glide, the stiff and responsive sole from the S/Lab Ultra 3, and a very similar lightweight upper from the S/Lab Sense 8. I tested these a couple times on some rocky local trails and liked them enough to race in them at Moab Trail Marathon this past fall and was very impressed by them.
I have a very narrow foot and at first these felt like the upper was going to be loose, but with a little lacing patience, the upper hugs down on your foot and the shoe feels secure even on off-camber rocky sections or loose/fast cornering. The upper ended up folding over a bit under the laces for me, but unlike some other shoes where I could feel the extra material on top of my foot, I didn't notice it at all with the Pulsar Trail Pro's.
I still love my S/Lab Ultra 3's, but the Pulsar Trail Pro's may edge them out as my new favorites. They've even been working well as a winter road trainer on snowier days.
