I have been wearing Salomon XUltra hiking boots for years and they rarely disappoint. These 4?s get 5 stars and are my favorite pair so far. However, I did not find that they ran large and had to return my first pair because I downsized as recommended on the site. I re-ordered and purchased my regular Salomon (and sneaker) size. I love them so much I bought another pair immediately in case Solomon decides to change the style/fit which they tend to do. Even after my weekly 12-14 mile hikes over rocky terrain my feet never get hot spots, blisters, or get wet. I especially love the generous toe bed. Right out of the box I?m ready to hit the trails with no break-in. These boots are little work horses that also happen to be quite stylish. Brawn & beauty works for me!

2nd pair of these boots. Benefits ? you can walk straight away. No need to break in.
I have never had to write a review for boots as Salomon are fantastic with their customer service. However, please please don?t bother buying these. First pair no longer waterproof after 9 months. Second pair haven?t even lasted 2 months!! This is abysmal. I can?t abide waste and now I have two pairs that look absolutely fine but my feet are soaking wet even if I just look at damp grass.

I wore my new hiking shoes for the first time today. I want to love them, but I can't. They have definite pros and cons.

PROS:
- The traction was appropriate and didn't result in any trail slips on the rocks or gravel.
- The sole is firm enough to prevent excessive foot pain from hours of trekking on a rocky trail.
- I love the (blue) color far more than I thought I would.
- I ordered my regular Salomon size and wore them with my usual merino wool hiking socks. The boots felt true-to-size.
- The height of the boot prevented gravel from getting into my shoes. (That was a usual occurrence with my low hikers.)

CONS:
- The insoles are poorly padded. Compared to my low Salomon hikers, these are shockingly poorly padded. If I continue to use these boots, I'll definitely need to add a better insole.
- The padded collar of the ankle support is stiff. It's not the worst I've experienced, but I'll be feeling the pressure for a couple days. I didn't have them too tightly laced today, and I'm hoping this area breaks in at some point.
- While the boots fit well on level terrain and on the inclines, I had some toe-rubbing on the lateral edges (big and little toes) of the toe-box during the descents. This was surprising, but I think I've escaped any blisters.

If Salomon could make me a pair of hiking boots that combined the Vaya from the insoles up resting atop these soles and traction, I would be super stoked! I hope by eventually adding some aftermarket insoles, I can come close to that wish.

I was initially really excited about these boots because it look like a combined all of the good elements of other Salomon boots. After plenty of chances and technical issues on even simple trails, I'm saying goodbye to these boots after less than two months of use and just over a hundred miles.
They've already torn, the laces are already frayed, they run too big, my feet are instantly hot, and overall just uncomfortable.
I was really hoping these were going to be great.

I have had three pairs of Salomon Speedcross in Size 7.5. I tried the X Ultra Mid GTX 3 shoes and the size 8 fit but I wanted to wait for version 4. I ordered online thinking that the size 7.5 would fit and maybe a little snug but I was wrong. The size 7.5 fits like an 8 - too big! It?s a hassle for online customers to have to guess which size will fit. Now I?ll have to drive out to my nearest Salomon store 30 K away just to see if the size 7 fits before I attempt an exchange. Frustrating experience.

I bought these boots just shy of 12 months ago, they are extremely comfortable and lightweight, the goretex wasn?t amazing but I could live with the occasional leak in wet grass.
What I can?t live with however are the holes that started to appear after 8 months of owning them, these probably only had 4 months of use (I opt to use trainers in the warmer/drier summer and now a few months later the holes are getting bigger and I suspect it won?t be much longer until the begin to fall to pieces. The goretex is now also defunct with holes.
Regardless of whatever reply salomon decide to apply to this review they are not honouring the warranty on my particular pair, as although they are clearly faulty they were a replacement for another faulty pair of boots where the stitching came undone, and the combined duration for both pairs was over the 2 years so please be aware of this when buying any of their products with a warranty, apparently two wrongs do make a right as far as this company are concerned ... given these ones can?t even make it to 12 months, personally I?d recommend shopping around for something a little more hardwearing.

My old Salomons gave up the ghost after 7 comfortable and blister free years so I bought these as a replacement. I went down by half a size having read the reviews and the boots felt comfortable enough to keep when tried on with walking socks.

I've just come back from my first walk in them and my feet are really sore. I've got a blister on the end of one toe, another between two toes, and the soles of my feet/toes are really sore. I've never had this problem before with Salomon footwear. This was after just 3 miles! So disappointed.

Boots fit and feel great - they also look good too. I am an average size UK 6 and recalling what some of the other reviews said, I am pleased I did not order a smaller size (5/5.5) otherwise would have been too small.

I bought these just under a year ago and I loved them straight out of the box - I?ve worn Salomons for years and these were the best fitting pair yet and needed no break in time!
With every pair of Salomons though, I always have the toe crease split and ruin the waterproofing, and this pair also had the tread wear down so quickly, I now also have a hole in the bottom of the shoe, also ruining the waterproofing.

I?m super sad that this pair didn?t even last a year when other pairs have lasted much longer - I am hard on my gear as I hike 25-50km per week - and for the higher price tag I had higher hopes as well.

With all the hypes about X Ultra 4, I had been wanting a pair and finally bought it last October. I had a great first impression. The boots were comfortable, even for my first use. No break in was needed. However, after just a few months wearing them for my regular exercise on a short trail, the tractions worn out less than 6 months. The traction worn out faster than my other hiking boots from Columbia and Keen. With a higher price tag, I would expect a better quality. Sadly, they don't live up with all the hypes publishing on a number of product review websites. Also, the waterproof did not seem to work as described. This first pair of Salomon made me doubt about the Salomon quality overall.
