New models fit too tightly in the same size ordered the previous years model.
Last years front left and right pocket were cut so you could easily place your hand or any item into the pockets.
The new model pockets top load and are tight and difficult to place your hands in. Perhaps this is supposed to be a feature but for me I greatly dislike it.
The leg cuff adjustment piece is unintuitive, cheap, and a disappointment.
Overall I'm disappointed that my favorite pants are no longer comfortable. I may try to exchange one of the two new pairs for a size up but I'm not sure I will bother. These pants used to be outrageously comfortable. The same pants in the same size in the new version are not at all.
The question arises of durability. In fact, despite giving a rating of overall excellence, outdoorgearlab notes: "we have some questions about long-term durability"
OR previously offered but discontinued the "Sentinel" pant - a backpacking pant with thicker material but still quick dry. A totally different approach in fact. Less nimble, but still loose and flowing and surely much more resistant to abrasion, regardless of claims of "ripstop nylon fabric."
In recent years there's an overall trend toward comfort with reduced valorization of durability. The relative durability of a pant (or a shoe) is only gauged with time, and initial consumer ratings may be largely blind to this issue. If you backpack, however, it's paramount. If you rip pants sliding on a rock, they are ruined.
Hopefully consumers will be mindful of durability and able to comment on it in reviews after some trail time.
Note: by its use of (rock) images on the product page, OR suggests this pant is for the trail; however it does not even include the category "Durability" in its own scaled descriptors (whereas it does for Cirque III, for e.g.). So there's really a lot of ambiguity. In short: this pant may be exceptional where flexibility and lightness are needed, but not durable.
My only issue with this new design is the leg opening tightening system. It's a standard elastic cord with a plastic retainer, like any other piece of clothing with a similar system. The major design flaw however is that the plastic clip is 'W' shaped, meaning that the cord is NOT fully encased in the clip and instead rests via pressure fit in the valleys of the 'W' shape.
Since the plastic clip is tiny (as in a few millimetres long), and not actually attached to the pants in any way, it gets lost easily. The cords do not stay in the clip well at all, and they've come off more times than I can count after a week of wearing. After the first wash, both clips disappeared into the washing machine forever.
It would have taken very little effort to attach the clip to the pants in order to prevent loss, or change the design to ensure the clip cannot physically come off. If you're buying these because you specifically want the ability to tighten the leg openings, prepare to endlessly hunt for the little clips.
First the good: I'm 6 ft. 0.5 inch, about 190 pounds. My waist actually measures to close to 40 inches (mid-aged tire/spread), yet most 36-inch waist pants fit fine, especially if they has a bit of elastic built into the waist band. These Ferosi pants didn't, and they're a bit snug, but entirely usable. Go figure. I'd call the overall fit "regular," not skinny-teenager and not baggy. I take a 31-inch inseam length. These are 32, so i cuff them up, and may have them taken up. There's no ankle elastic or adjustment on this version, which is fine by me.
The material is thin, but doesn't seem fragile. I'd consider it to be a summer/warm-weather weight material. No snags, pulls, or runs, but the pants have only seen casual use. They have a good amount of stretch, so they move well.
I wore them only a few times before noticing the stitching coming out along the rear butt seam. I contacted customer service to see if OR had a repair service. They don't. In lieu of returning they, they wanted me to essentially draw a large "X" somewhere on the pants with an indelible marker, take a picture to confirm this, and send it to them, after which they'd issue a refund. This from a company that pretends to care about "sustainability" and stuff.
What i did instead what cut some thin strips out of black tape to make an "X." I played their ridiculous game, got the credit, and tried another pair of pants (Cirque Work Pants), but they had stitching issues even before being worn, so they went back, too, and i used the credit for something else.
I got the Ferosi pants reinforced by a local shop. They were fine for a while, but the stitching is coming out along various seams, mostly in the crotch gusset area. Will get these fixed, too. Can't really recommend these unless QC has improved.
